Xikou, a town located 20 kilometers southwest of Ningbo, Zhejiang province and under the administration of Fenghua City, is the birthplace of Chiang Kai-shek, former president of the Republic of China (1912-1949). It used to be the command center for Kuomintang (KMT), and is now one of the nationwide famous tourism towns accredited as National 5-A Scenic Area.  There are scenic spots of Wuling, Shanxi and Xuedou Mountain. Occupying 140 square kilometers, Xikou also boasts of its former residence of Mr. Chiang, which is now listed as the state-level unit of cultural relics protection.

According to the Fenghua Annals, Fan Liangzhong, then supervisory censor gave up his post to get away from politics and settled down in Xikou. Statistics show that the population in the Baoqing reign of the Song Dynasty reached 8,000. And in 1184, Wei Qi, prime minister of the South Song Dynasty was buried in the Feifeng Mountain, Xikou, which showed that Xikou had made a name even at that time.

Xikou Town is situated northwest to Fenghua City and 22 kilometers away in the southwest to downtown Ningbo. Xikou, or literally the Mouth of the River, derives its name from the Shanxi Creek, a river that originates in the Dahu Mountain of Shanjieling Range, from which it winds its way through Xinchang County to Fenghua, wherein it runs across Fenghua Town from west to east, flowing out of the mouth between Wuling Mountain and Xinan Mountain, hence the town got its name: a town at the mouth of the river. Xikou the town is also called Wuling, a name after the Wuling Mountain that stands south of the town. Xikou has picturesque scenery and landscape. It is surrounded by clusters of green mountains with Shanxi River flowing across. In the Qing Dynasty, scholars summarized Ten Attractions of Xikou, which are Towering Wenchang Pavilion, Fondling Waves of the Shanxi Creek, verdant riverside, fishes in green pools, moonlight over pine trees, night boating in the creeks, autumn moon and murmuring creeks, sunset on the snow mountains, snow over Wuling mountains in the fine day, plum blossoms in the early spring on the south bank of the creek. Of special importance is the Xuedong Mountain Scenic Area of Xikou, which has a number of scenic spots and is ranked among the best tourist sites in the east Zhejiang Province.

Small as it is, Xikou was once the eye of Chinese political storm. It is the hometown of Mr. Chiang Kai-shek and his son Chiang Ching-kuo, two important historical figures in the modem history of China. They often came back when they had the supreme political power of China in grasp and plotted events here. Zhang Xueliang, the famous general who rebelled and captured Chiang Kai-shek in Xi’an Incident, was detained in Xikou after the incident was peacefully settled.

Chiang’s birthplace, former villa and ancestral hall are scattered along the Wuling Street in Xikou Town, some of which have been listed as state-level cultural relics.

In the Song Dynasty Xuedou Temple was deemed as one of the most famous Buddhist temples in China, as the place where Maitreya Buddha practiced his Buddhist rites.

It is these unique cultural and historical heritages, natural sights and Buddhist culture that make Xikou attractive as a tourist site.
