Ningbo Embroidery

Ningbo embroidery is a traditional art boasting a long history. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, the market of Ningbo embroidered fabric was greatly developed. It was seen in every household in Ningbo. Embroidery products were sold to the countries in Southeast Asia. From that time, Ningbo embroidery has been on a par with Suzhou embroidery, Hunan embroidery and Sichuan embroidery. According to Annals of Yin County, in 1932 there were as many as 15,000 embroidery products produced in Ningbo.

Ningbo embroidery has a unique local style with the general composition of pictures and beautiful colors including black, grey, cyan, strong brown, sienna, and celadon. There are many different stitches such as slanting needle,fibula, fat needle, silk reeling, silk clipping, drawnwork, and node needle. When the needlework has been finished, soutache embroidery will be used for its decoration with cannetille.  The patterns are mostly based on traditional pictures such as dragon, phoenix, peony, and birds. With those beautiful patterns, the embroidery has the flavor of antiquity and elegancy.

Different materials are used in Ningbo embroidery, such as authentic silk and rayon. Cannetilles are used to line up the patterns. The embroidery thus made take on a peculiar style of elegance.  

For the past few years, Ningbo embroidery has been upgraded constantly. Now it is not only artwork, but also for daily use. Besides, it could serve as quality tourist souvenirs and gifts for friends. Zhao Puchu, the late vice president of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and a well-noted Buddhist and social activist, highly credited the Ningbo embroidery when he visited Ningbo in 1978. He gave high remarks to Ningbo embroidery by saying that it is highly ingenuous, reflects of both ancient and current tastes, presents exotic flavors and wonderful stitchwork.

Ningbo embroidery craftsman have tried to absorb foreign advanced methods while inheriting and developing the traditional aircrafts, promoting the art to a higher level. The large screen of Ningbo embroidery named “Hundreds of Cranes in Morning Sun” won a Hundred Flowers Awards for arts and crafts in 1989 and thus was collected by China Art Gallery.
