Yo-Yo Ma, whose ancestral home is Yinxian County (now a part of Yinzhou District, Ningbo), was born in 1955 in Paris, France, and began to learn cello at the age of four. He entered the prestigious Julia Conservatory at the age of nine, was well commented by the famous conductor Bernstein at the age of 15, and graduated from Harvard University at the age of 21. At the age of 23, he won the Avery Fisher Award and he is currently an influential Chinese cellist who is active on the music stage in the world.
