According to the Ningbo Municipal Bureau of Statistics, the released results of the 7th national population census in Ningbo show that among the 9.4043 million permanent residents in Ningbo, the top 10 surnames were Wang, Chen, Zhang, Li, Zhou, Xu, Yang, Liu, Hu, and Wu. As the top four surnames, Wang, Chen, Zhang, and Li together account for 22.9% of the city's permanent population. The top ten surnames account for 38.4% of the city's permanent population, i.e., one out of every three permanent residents is from the top ten surnames.

Other Top 10 Surnames

The surname “Li”, a major surname during the Tang, Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties, ranks 4th, with a permanent population of 403800 in Ningbo.

The surname “Zhou”, as an ancient surname based on clan and national names, has a permanent population of 260100 in Ningbo, ranking 5th.

The surname “Xu”, which is highly distributed in the Yangtze River Delta region, has 257500 people in Ningbo, ranking 6th.

The ancient surname “Yang”, with the totem of "Rising sun over the Tang Valley", has not only become a major surname in China, but also widely distributed overseas. Ningbo has a total of 249800 permanent residents with this surname, ranking 7th.

The surname “Liu”, known as "ubiquitous Liu", is mainly distributed in the northern and central plains regions. It is the 8th largest surname in Ningbo, with a total of 238800 permanent residents.

The surname “Hu”, originating from vassal state of Hu during the Zhou Dynasty, has 235200 people in Ningbo, ranking 9th.
