Ningbo governs six districts, two counties and two county-level cities, namely Haishu District, Jiangbei District, Zhenhai District, Beilun District, Yinzhou District and Fenghua District, Ninghai County and Xiangshan County, and Cixi City and Yuyao City. There are 73 towns, 10 townships, 73 sub-district offices, 791 residents committees and 2,154 village committees.
Regional area
The total land area of the city is 9,816 square kilometers, of which the urban area is 3,730 square kilometers. The total sea area of the Ningbo is 8355.8 square kilometers. According to the dynamic monitoring data of coastline in 2018, the total length of coastline is 1,678 kilometers, accounting for about one quarter of the coastline of the whole province. There are 611 islands in the city, covering an area of 277 square kilometers.

Climatic conditions
Ningbo is of the north subtropical monsoon climate, mild and humid, with four distinct seasons. The annual average temperature of Ningbo is 16.4 ℃, and the highest monthly average temperature is in July, 28.0 ℃, and the lowest in January, 5.4 ℃. The frost-free period in the city is generally 230 to 240 days. The average annual precipitation is about 1,480mm, with that from May to September accounting for 60% of the total. The annual average number of sunshine hours is 1,850.
Hydrological condition
Ningbo has one of the eight major water systems in Zhejiang Province, with three rivers, namely Yuyao River, Fenghua River and Yongjiang river. Yuyao River originates from the Lianghu Lake in Shangyu District of Shaoxing, and Fenghua River originates from Banzhu Village of Fenghua District of Ningbo. Yuyao River and Fenghua River converge into Yongjiang River at the “Sanjiangkou” Area in the urban area, flowing to the northeast and entering the East China Sea through Zhaobao Mountain.

The permanent resident population of Ningbo stood at 9.618 million people by the end of 2022, with the proportion of urban residents in the total population (i.e. urbanization rate) being 78.9%.

In 2022, the city’s total fiscal revenue was 335.86 billion yuan, up by 2.9% over the previous year, including 168.02 billion yuan of general public budget revenue, decreased by 2.5%. The general public budget expenditure stood at 218.78 billion yuan, up by 12.5%.

In 2022, the per capita living consumption expenditure of residents was 42,997 yuan, up by 6.2% over the previous year.
