Established in 1904, Yuankang Cloth Store was founded by Tu Jingshan from Yinzhou District, Ningbo with a total invesment of 30,000 yuan (US$4838.71) at that time. Located at Rixin Street previously, Yuankang Cloth Store had booming business and then moved to Dongmen Street. Yuankang Cloth Store specialized in black and white blue denim, wool, silk, hemp products etc. It featured low price, high quality, various patterns, top dye and excellent technique. Besides, it had a dyehouse. At that time, people admired Tu Jingshan a lot, a gingle went that “the boss Tu Jingshan, with 33,000 yuan, on Mar. 3rd cloth-selling business began”.
Yuankang Cloth Store has major ups and downs during the 100 years of history. Yuankang adopted public-private partnership in 1955; doubled its space in 1973; regained the brand name “Yuankang Cloth Store” and had a sales department at the second floor to sell clothes in 1980; changed the name into “Yuankang Textile Mall” in 1987, including 8 sales departments to sell cotton, silk, wool, chemical fiber, textiles and clothing. Owing to its various, famous, high-quality and latest products, Yuankang tops other stores in the industry in Ningbo. Yuankang was awarded “Advanced Provincial Enterprise” in 1989 and “Time-honored Brand in Zhejiang” in 2010.
Offering famous, unique and top-flight fabrics, Yuankang topped other stores in the industry and prospered in Ningbo. Traditional and new high-quality fabrics were popular among existing and new customers.
Yuankang features a wide variety of patterns. Besides well-known black and white blue it also offers denim, wool, silk, hemp products and all cotton cloth. In Yuankang Cloth Store, salesmen doesn’t stand behind one counter, but accompanies the clients through different counters buying all textiles or accessories like cotton cloth, wool fabric, silk fabrics, welt or waistband. and the processes of reception, payment collection and goods delivery are done by one salesman.
After the demolition at East Zhongshan Road in 1999, Yuankang first moved to Dongdu Road (No.55, Cuiya Street), then to No.207, Shizi Street in 2004, and then moved to No.172, Shizi Street 3 years later due to demolition. Owing to its time-honored reputation and adaptable management, Yuankang still survives and thrives.
