Jiufeng Mountain lies at the east tip of the continental shelf of the regions south of Yangtze River. The main peak of Jiufeng Mountain, with a highest elevation of 499 meters, offers a view of a spectacular sunrise and a starry sky above the East China Sea. Surrounded by lush green forests covering rolling hills, it faces Mount Putuo across the sea, overlooking Zhoushan Islands in the east, Port of Xiangshan in the south, downtown Ningbo in the west, and Hangzhou Bay in the north.

There are 26 peaks, two lakes, and nearly 10,000 mu (666.67 hectares) of forest in the scenic area. Consisting of such sub-scenic areas as Wuxiaoniang Scenic Area, Ruiyan Scenic Area and Yan Lake, it is Ningbo's mountain-climbing base, ranked as one of the Top 10 Leisure Tourism Bases and Top 10 Ecologic Scenic Areas.

Known for its forest landscape, the scenic area offers such leisure activities as sightseeing, experiencing religious and folk customs, mountaineering, vacationing and so on. Jiufeng has become one of the best places in Ningbo or even eastern China to go for a good hike and watch the sunrise and the sky. Covered with subtropical evergreen broad-leaf forest, it is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including the Zhenhai (Jiufeng) Acanthostega, a wildlife species under special state protection which is rarer than pandas and is the archetype of the mascot Yuan Yuan of the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix hosted in Ningbo. In the scenic area there are Ruiyan Temple, Tiantong Temple and Temple of King Ayuwang (Asoka), reputed as the three sacred Chinese Buddhist temples. And Tiantong Temple is often referred to as the "Dongnan Foguo (Buddhist Country in Southeast China)".

An array of festivals and events are hosted here all year around, including Cultural Festival, Mountaineering Festival, Plum Blossom Festival, Cherry Blossom Festival, etc. Around the area are many holiday villages and home hostels or restaurants (Chinese: nong jia le) to host tourists.
